CoTrack

CoTrack is a web-based tool to conduct collaborative activity in online space as well as physical space. It uses Etherpad to offer a collaborative writing space. In addition to offering collaboration space, CoTrack also allows capturing of participants' activities, happening in digital and physical spaces (e.g., speaking time, turn-taking, number of characters written/deleted, etc.).

The primary stakeholders of CoTrack are Teachers and Computer-supported collaborative learning(CSCL) Researchers. Teachers can use CoTrack to conduct group activities with monitoring facility, which enable teachers to identify groups who are in need of help or not participating well.
CSCL Researchers can also use CoTrack to collect data for their study to understand aspects of collaborative learning (e.g., regulation, collaboration process). The use of CoTrack benefits researchers by saving their time otherwise invested in developing/setting up data collection tools. CoTrack offers researchers pre-processed data from the group-activity in CSV (Comma Seperated Value) file for further analysis.

CoTrack benefits

  • Custom activity design
  • CoTrack allows teachers/researchers to cusomize the group activity and data recording. For example, CoTrack supports three different types of group activities: first, which only involves use of collaborative text editor; second, which only involves use of audio/video communication channels; third, which invovles both. The recording can also be customized, e.g., record only audio or video.
  • Multimodal data collection
  • CoTrack captures following types of data
    1. Voice activity detection (VAD): Data indicating whether someone speaks or not.
    2. Speech to text: Transcript from audio data using Google speech-to-text api in real time (only supported in chrome browser).
    3. Writing logs: Log data of participants' writing in collaborative text editor.
  • Activity monitoring
  • CoTracks offers a real-time dashboard (updates every 30 seconds) presenting a social network (who is talking after whom network) and groups' writing activities in terms of number of revisions made.
  • Downloading data
  • CoTrack also facilitates downloading of captured data e.g., VAD, Speech-to-text, writing logs, in CSV format for later analysis.
  • Collaboration quality estimation
  • CoTrack also offers automated estimation of collaboration quality and potential intervention strategy from learning sciences literature.
